The current New York State Poet Laureate is
Alice Ostriker.Alicia was born in New York City. She has won many awards for her poetry and in 2015 she was elected Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. She has taught in the low-residency Poetry MFA program of Drew University and New England College. Alicia is currently a professor emerita of English at Rutgers University.The position of New York State Poet Laureate was created on August 1st, 1985.

**The New York Council on the Arts ** provides support for arts groups and writers groups through grants and a large number of programs. The Council also supports cultural activities, arts in schools and community arts projects. More information about programs and grants can be found on the link above.
The Poetry Society of New York is a resource for all New York poets, from beginners to accomplished authors. The Society offers a number of contests, and when possible, meetings and conferences. Currently, the Society is offering online workshops through Milk Press. The New York Poetry Society has various levels of membership. For the past several years, thousands of New York high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the New York Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. The above link is for a student poetry slam in New York City, one of many in the State.
Poets House is a collection of thousands of poetry books, chapbooks and poetry journals in New York City. Poets house provides a number of online productions by noted poets. For information on this amazing project, please see the link above.
The New York Writing Club is a group of nearly 5,000 members in New York City that welcomes everyone with a passion for writing. The group is open to writers of all genres of writing from poetry, to fiction to nonfiction. Currently, many activities are online via Zoom. For more information, please see the link above.
The Poetry Table is open to all poets in New York City. The group meets to ‘break bread’ and network with each other. There are opportunities for poets to read poems and projects in which members write new poems, on the spot. The Poetry Table also welcomes interested person to start their own Poetry Table, where ever they live. More information is available on the above site.
** Storytellers of New York** is a group of more than 7,000 writers, actors and artists in New York City that meet to exchange stories. The goal is to create a ‘campfire like feel’ to the narratives. Information on events and membership can be found on the link above.
Shut Up and Write is a group of more than 9,000 members that meet to support writers in New York City of all genres, from fiction to poetry. Currently, the group is meeting online. For calendar and information on joining the group, please see the above link.
Albany Area Poetry Chat is a group in Albany that welcomes all writers of poetry and all readers of poetry. The group had been meeting monthly, but now hopes to meet online. Please see the above link for more information.
The Astoria Writers Group is a group of almost 4,000 members in Astoria that supports writers of all genres and all skill levels. They meet (when possible) to network and critique each other’s work. The group currently meets online. Please see link above for calendar information.
The New York Writers Coalition is free and open to writers of all ages and all genres, from poetry to nonfiction. The purpose of the NYWC is to encourage writers to move forward with their writing, by providing online workshops and resources. More information can be found on the link above.
The Hudson Valley Writers Guild is a group in Troy that supports writers of all genres of writing. Membership dues are $30.00 per year and membership is open to all writers. The group provides readings and opportunities for writers to connect with each other. When possible, the Hudson Valley Writers has hosted ‘poetry in the park’, held weekly each summer in Albany. About the author: Steven Robert Heine is an American poet. He has spent his life writing poetry and promoting the reading of it. In 2011 Heine was seriously crippled in a fall. Several surgeries later, Heine lives with a great deal of pain. (He is not on any disability). He tries to provide this site as a service to the poets of New York.

Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including many trips to New York. Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies. His books can be found on Ebay, Amazon and Amazon Kindle.
Heine was crippled in a fall in 2011 and now makes very few public appearances.
